This year marks the 16th year the the Osceola County Community Foundation Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is offering mini-grants for educators in Osceola County.  The mini-grant program is open to K-12, alternative education, community education and preschool education in all county accredited schools.

A typical mini-grant award ranges from $200-$500.  The program is designed to offer resources for activities that school district budgets typically cannot afford to fund.  Awards will only be granted for projects that will benefit the condition of youth attending accredited schools in Osceola County.

What Kinds of Special Projects will be Funded?

Highest priority will be given to creative, innovative projects rather than ones that conventional in approach.  The YAC is looking for special projects to enhance the learning experience for students in Osceola County schools.

Applications will be judged on individual merit.  Awardees will be selected by criteria among which are the following.

  • How creative and innovative the proposed project and the potential for success.
  • The Potential to improve the student achievement and morale.
  • The number of students involved.
  • The potential for replicating this project in other classrooms.
  • The cost-effectiveness for the proposed project.
Who May Apply and What is the Process?

All teachers and non-administrative teaching personnel from any accredited school in Osceola County may apply.  Please limit your application on the form provided.  Attachments are discouraged unless they are essential to the YAC member's understanding of the proposed project.  All applications must contain:

  • A complete description of the proposed project and how it will be conducted.
  • The expected results or outcomes.
  • An itemized budget of anticipated revenue sources and expenses.
  • Signature of your principle or superintendent.

Is there anything the Youth Council will not fund?

  • No funding for religious techings or activities/
  • No funding for teacher's wages, tuition, or conference expenses, etc.
  • No funding for equipment normally supplied by schools.
  • No funding for sales tax and shipping/handling costs.
  • No funding textbooks or workbooks normally supplied by schools; however, supplemental.  Reading books used in innovative ways will be considered.

All grants are awarded on a one-year basis.  Total funding from all sources may not exceed your total project cost.  If your project is funded by the YAC, it is expected that you will withdraw other grants proposals for the same costs.

Who will determine mini-grant awards? When may I expect the award?

The Osceola County Community Foundation YAC will select the grantees.  This council is composed of high school representatives from Evart, Marion, Pine River, and Reed City public schools.  This is the calendar for grant approval:

  • Application Process - September 2009
  • Application Deadline - October 16, 2009
  • YAC Approval/Denial Process - Oct/Nov 2009
  • Osceola County Community Foundation Board of Trustees Review of YAC Grant Approval - December 2009
  • Letters to Grant Applicants of Tentative Approval Pending Review of Fremont Area Community Foundation - December 2009

  • Fremont Area Community Foundation Review of YAC Grant Awards (Final approval/denial of YAC Approval) - January 2010
  • Final Notification of Grant Awards - January 2010
  • Grant Awards - February 2010


Grant Award Project Completion Date and Evaluation

Grant award recipients will be asked to complete an evaluation of their project by the end of the 2010-2011 school year.  If the project is not concluded, if the costs are significantly less than anticipated, or if other funding is recieved, the unused YAC funds must be returned to the Foundation Youth Endowment Fund.  Any equipment purchased for the mini-grant project will become the property of the school district.
